Gay Club: More Than Just Dancing – A Place Where Orbits Cross

Share Article:

Is a gay club just a place to look for hook-ups, or is it a contemporary urban sanctuary where, for at least a few hours, you feel completely free? For some, it's a weekly ritual; for others, an occasional adventure; and some avoid it altogether – perhaps because of age, perhaps because the atmosphere has changed, or perhaps because they've found their "crew" outside those walls.

What are people actually looking for in that darkness lit only by strobes? For some, it's a sense of belonging that can't be found in a "mainstream" club; for others, the explicit freedom to flirt; for others still, simply the desire to dance without looking over their shoulder. And what about those who go out alone? For many, that's an act of brave self-empowerment, while others consider going out without "wings" (friends) too risky.

Do prejudices exist? Certainly. That all clubs are exclusively places for superficial encounters, that they're "for the young", that dress code and physical appearance are crucial for entering someone's circle. But experiences are varied: some talk of lifelong friendships formed at the bar, others of the pressure to be "fun enough" or "attractive enough".
